Food prices increase by 59%
It has been revealed today in a survey from MySupermarket.com that shoppers are paying up to 59 per cent more for basic foods than they did in 2007.

Staple foods such as bread and eggs increased by 18 per cent, whilst tea increased by 30 per cent. Rice has suffered an impressive 59 per cent increase in price over the last three years, whilst meat overall went up by ten per cent.

According to the survey from the price comparison website, there were some foods to buck the trend. The price of chicken and turkey both decreased by six per cent, and fresh fish prices were down by eight per cent, 

The cost of bringing up kids however continues to shoot up - with the price of baby essentials leaping by a third. A 29 per cent increase has taken place on the cost of baby milk and drinks since 2007, with the average price moving from £2.95 to £3.80. Baby snack prices have grown by 21 per cent to £1.28 for a single packet. 

Keeping pets is also getting more expensive, with cat food and dog food suffering price increases of up 13 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

Jonny Steel, MySupermarket spokesman  said: "Shoppers need to make sure they don't become complacent now the recession is over.

"The battle to save money is still very much on."
