Morrisons to recruit homeless and stay open later
Morrisons to recruit homeless and stay open later
Supermarket giant Morrisons has announced that it is to hire 1,000 homeless people over the next three years, as well as trial longer opening hours for the upcoming Christmas trading period.

The UK's fourth-largest food retailer is pledging to offer 10% of the jobs created to "vunerable" people in an initiative run with the Salvation Army as well as social enterprise Create.

The new Morrisons store in Harehills, Leeds, was where the first five people on the scheme began work on Monday.

Group HR director for Morrisons, Norman Pickavance, said: "This initiative will help disadvantaged people to get their lives back on track.

"We look forward to taking this approach nationally and we would encourage other British businesses to join us on this initiative."

The chain has also submitted applications to extend opening hours for the Christmas shopping period.

Current opening hours at Morrisons vary, tending to open at 8am and close between 8pm and 10pm. The trials would see these change to 6am to 11pm.

According to the supermarket, the results of the trial will be monitored until Christmas, with a more permanent decision being made for the same period next year.
