After sales rose almost a fifth in the past year, the UK roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco market is now reportedly worth £1bn.
According to statistics from AC Nielsen, the global marketing research firm, in the 12 months to July, retail sales of RYO tobacco hit a new high of £1.026bn.
The sales increased by 19% in value and 16.5% in volume over the same period of time, which means that in the past five years, volumes have shown double-digit jumps.
A spokesman for Imperial Tobacco, whose brands include Drum and Golden Virginia, said: “this is a significant milestone for the RYO market. We are proud that Golden Virginia continues to lead the market, accounting for around half of this figure.”
£11.3bn is the amount of overall tobacco sales in 2009. |
