Should restaurants show the calories in their food?
Should restaurants show the calories in their food?
If current plans go ahead, restaurants and fast food outlets will have to display the calorie contents of their food. The decision would bring them in line with all other lines of food trading.

Andrew Lansley, health secretary, has indicated that the proposed legislation is the latest move by Whitehall to tackle the obesity epidemic,  as nutritional values of meals bought in a restaurant tend to be ignored.

The plans would also involve food served in pubs and could soon be extended to involve alcoholic drinks.

"We are working with industry on a range of options. At present, there are no plans to legislate," said a Department of Health spokesman.

The news comes after it was found last week that many fast food outlets had opted out of displaying calories in a voluntary scheme, as the conclusion of a trial period found them to be unneeded.
